CULTURE & ARCHITECTURE · DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES · OCTOBER 31, 2026

Downtown LA is an interior city, too

Central Library and the Bradbury Building invite a different reading of Los Angeles: through rooms, daylight and the decisions that keep older buildings useful. One is a civic institution, the other an office landmark. Together, they make a case for looking beyond a building’s street-facing image.

A library that reached its hundredth year

Central Library opened to the public on July 6, 1926, with its formal dedication following on July 15, according to the Los Angeles Public Library’s centennial chronology. In 2026, its architecture is a century-old part of the city’s everyday infrastructure, rather than simply a backdrop to an anniversary.

The story was never a straight line from opening day to preservation. After the devastating 1986 fire, service eventually resumed temporarily in another building in 1989. The restored Central Library and its Tom Bradley Wing reopened on October 3, 1993. Those are different milestones: the return of a service and the return to its home.

That distinction is useful when thinking about architectural value. A landmark’s survival is not only a matter of keeping walls upright. It also depends on whether a city can continue doing something worthwhile inside them.

Look for the join between old and new

The library’s own architecture-tour introduction pairs the 1926 Bertram Goodhue building, with its rooftop pyramid and sphinxes, with Norman Pfeiffer’s 1993 Tom Bradley Wing. The newer wing’s eight-story atrium and chandeliers give visitors another way to experience scale and light.

Rather than treating the addition as an interruption, use the contrast as the starting point. What changes as the spaces open up? Where does ornament direct attention? These are questions for a visit, not claims from an OPC inspection or an architectural tour we attended.

Bradbury: an office building with a cinematic second life

At 304 S. Broadway, the Bradbury Building’s relatively restrained exterior conceals the interior for which it is famous. The Los Angeles Conservancy describes a tall, daylit court with open-cage elevators, marble stairs and elaborate ironwork. Opened in 1893, it remains an office-building landmark as well as a recognizable film setting, including in Blade Runner.

Its authorship deserves care. The Conservancy records Sumner Hunt’s initial designs and George H. Wyman’s later supervision of construction, while noting uncertainty over the final design attribution. Reducing the building to one uncontested architect’s name would hide that uncertainty.

The contrast with Central Library is instructive: public architectural interest does not make every interior public space. The Conservancy does not operate the Bradbury. This article does not promise unrestricted access, elevator use or entry to working offices.

Plan a real visit, not an assumed one

Central Library: 630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071. Its docent art-and-architecture tours are free. The library’s calendar currently lists Saturday afternoon sessions from 2–3 p.m., including November 7, 2026, in Los Angeles local time. Meet in the Main Lobby by the Library Store. The event is listed for adults and seniors, in English; check the live calendar before travelling.

For disability-related accommodations, the event page asks visitors to call (213) 228-7430 at least five business days ahead, while noting that later requests will be considered. Organized groups of eight or more should consult the library’s group-tour arrangements rather than assume a regular session can accommodate them.

Bradbury Building: 304 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90013. Current general visiting hours, access conditions and any admission charge were not confirmed for this feature. Contact the building at (213) 626-1893 before making an interior visit the purpose of a trip.
